Scent School (16+ weeks old)
A dog’s sense of smell is functional at birth, and from the moment they're born, your dog lives in a world rich with scents. A dog’s nose is an amazing thing to behold. Dogs have the ability to: wiggle each nostril independently, breathe in through the holes in the front of the nose and exhale through the side slits, they are also able to discern individual odours making up what we could call a “scent.”
We have about 5 million cells devoted to smelling; dogs have up to 220 million. Dogs also have four times the brain power devoted to processing scents compared to humans. When dogs smell something they are not just registering a smell, they get an entire story. Ever wonder why your dog’s nose is wet? The mucus on a dog’s nose actually helps it smell by capturing scent particles. When a dog’s nose is dry they may lick it to aid them in scent.
The purpose of our Scent School classes is to provide an outlet to channel your dog’s amazing sense of smell whilst building confidence in your dog, providing mental stimulation, reinforcing the bond between you and your dog and to have lots of fun!
Nose work, scent games or scent training is the latest dog training activity that develops your dog’s amazing natural scenting ability. Have fun with your dog while teaching your dog to detect a scent as quickly as possible and indicate to you that the scent has been located.
Best of all, any dog can do it!
